Stare at your fridge less, cook more — with one photo and Claude — DailySkill AI challenge card with an abstract brand illustration

👋 New here or behind? You don’t need to start at Day 1 — see today’s fresh picks → Today on DailySkill.

It’s 6pm, you’re hungry, and the fridge just has… stuff. No plan, no idea, no energy to figure it out.

Here’s the fix: snap one photo of your fridge, paste one prompt into Claude, and get 5 real recipe ideas ranked by what you can cook right now — no shopping trip required. Takes about 60 seconds.

Sound familiar?

You’ve got half an onion, some eggs, leftover rice, and spinach going soft. None of it feels like “a meal” on its own.

So you order takeout, or make the same boring plate again. There’s a faster way to turn random ingredients into dinner.

The 60-second fix

1. Take one clear photo

Open your fridge (and pantry, if you want) and snap a photo. Good lighting helps, but don’t overthink it — Claude just needs to see what’s in there.

2. Upload it to Claude and ask this

Open Claude, upload the photo, and paste this prompt:

Here's a photo of my fridge/pantry. Based on what you can see,
give me 5 recipe ideas I could realistically make with what I
have (assume I have basic staples like salt, oil, and pepper).
Rank them from easiest/most doable to most ambitious, and list
any ingredients I'd still need to buy for each one.

3. Pick one and ask for the recipe

Reply “give me the full recipe for #2” and Claude writes out the steps, ingredient amounts, and cook time.

No recipe browsing. No scrolling past someone’s life story to find the ingredient list.

Real example

Photo shows: 4 eggs, a bag of spinach, half a block of cheddar, two cups of leftover cooked rice, 3 tomatoes, and a jar of salsa.

Claude’s response:

  1. Spinach & cheddar fried rice — uses everything you have, ready in 15 min. No shopping needed.
  2. Egg and salsa breakfast tacos — need tortillas (everything else you have).
  3. Baked eggs with spinach and tomato — need a splash of cream or milk, optional.
  4. Loaded cheesy rice bowl with fried egg on top — no shopping needed.
  5. Tomato-spinach frittata — need one more egg if you want it thicker.

You ask: “give me the full recipe for #1.” Claude replies with exact steps: “Heat 1 tbsp oil in a pan, scramble 2 eggs, push aside, add 2 cups rice, break it up, stir in chopped spinach until wilted, fold in ½ cup shredded cheddar off heat. Serves 2, ready in 15 minutes.”

Notice the ranking: “no shopping needed” options float to the top. That’s ingredient-based cooking — fridge first, recipe second.

Level up

  • Snap your freezer too and ask Claude to combine both photos into one meal plan for the week.
  • Add a constraint: “make it kid-friendly,” “under 20 minutes,” or “high protein, low carb.”
  • Ask “what’s the one ingredient I should buy to unlock 3 more recipe options?” — great before a quick grocery run.

FAQ

Does the photo need to be perfectly organized?
No. Claude can usually spot ingredients even on a cluttered shelf. If something’s hidden, just add it in a sentence: “also have chicken breast and broccoli.”

What if I don’t have an ingredient it suggests?
Ask Claude to swap it: “I don’t have heavy cream, what can I use instead?” It’ll suggest a substitute from common staples.

Can this work for a whole week, not just tonight?
Yes — ask “turn this into a 3-day meal plan using what’s here plus a short grocery list” and Claude will build it out.
