Anthropic has introduced Claude Opus 4.8, an upgraded version of its most capable “Opus” class of AI models, announced on May 28, 2026.
What changed
Opus 4.8 builds on the previous release, Opus 4.7, with improvements across benchmarks, coding, agentic tasks (where the AI carries out multi-step work on its own), and professional work. It is also more consistent on long-running tasks. Importantly for everyday users, it is available today at the same price as the previous Opus version.
Why it matters to you
Even if you are completely new to AI, this is good news: the assistant you use just got more capable and more dependable — especially on longer, more involved requests — without any increase in price. Two new features also make it easier to work with. On claude.ai, you can now control how much effort Claude puts into a task, so you can ask for a quick reply when you are in a hurry or a more careful, thorough one when the work really matters. And Claude Code, Anthropic’s tool for writing software, adds a “dynamic workflows” feature designed for tackling very large tasks.
What you can do now
Open claude.ai and try a real task — drafting an email, summarizing a long document, or planning your week — and experiment with the new effort control to feel the difference between a fast answer and a thorough one. You do not need to upgrade or pay anything extra to benefit from the improvements. If you write code, take a look at the new “dynamic workflows” feature in Claude Code the next time you face a big, multi-step project.
